I've got a friend with a mid 60's GTO that was his high school car. It hasn't been on the road in years, and the time has come to have someone put it back in shape. He's thinking either rework the engine to deal with today's gas or drop in a crate motor and leave the original unmolested. Disk brakes would be a good upgrade, and of course all the suspension bits have pieces have to go. The body is straight, but he'll want a good paint job. Then he needs guidance on how much mopre to do.

Does anyone have any experience with a shop that does this type of work?

The old GTOs are almost rare so the old GTO community howls when one is modified, especially if its not reversible.

Crate engines are a clean and simple way to go, however you can save thousands if you build it yourself, assuming you are so inclined and need to save costs. One of the magazines had a study specifically about the cost of crate vs home built and the savings of home built were quite surprising. In the thousands like I said.

Yes the crate builders will procure parts cheaper than an individual but their mark-up is what pushes the price much higher.

I'm not pushing either way, I just want to throw it out for consideration on the chance that you might not be aware.

Frank,

You're spot on about not wanting to do anything that is not reversible. That's one of the reasons he's thinking about replacing the engine and leaving the original untouched.

Terry,

Thanks for the lead.
