| I dont know how I had green tire smoke. I wish there were some pics. My track tires a a little hard for the surface at MSR. If I had only had some good R-comps.

| Mark had a good idea about the green smoke, probably something on the asphalt. With as much soap from defensive driving events and who knows what else that had been put down I'll bet that is the green smoke mystery answer. I remember last year at this autox (TMS) we had to avoid certain areas on the lot because of a left over substance from an event right before we used the lot.

I learned to double check the car before leaving home for either a hat or sunscreen.
Saturday was my first time out in my gray e30 and the track layout was quite technical, but having DNF'd 3 times and not knowing where is quite frustrating (not to mention not having a map until the 2nd heat). I later learned it was by the sharp right-hander close to the slalom before the high speed straight by the club van.

| While working that corner during the second session I saw many cars DNF on the sharp right before the high speed slalom in front of the van. I instantly recognized, having DNF'ed that corner myself that it was a consistant problem for others also. It is impossible to communicate to a driver where he/she is getting lost. I considered adding a lay-down-pointer-cone next to the inside apex cone to amplify the identifier as a visual aid for these drivers. I did not reconfigure the cone but I did atempt (futile) to point out the apex cone that people were driving around (and subsequently DNFing) by waving an arm. As a novice, I found this course confusing. Judging by the number of DNF's I believe others were confused. Is there an ettiquite for attempting to assist drivers with finding their lines?

CosmosMpower (6/18/2008)Maybe next time you'll think of this before you buy a 4 foot wide car Although it must have been nice to have some power/torque coming out of any of the 6 pin turns when I (and all the other 4 cyl cars) were at 4000 rpms and bogging, each car has it's benefits. If anything this course was a point and shoot power course, Doug had FTD on street tires for a while! (Nice driving BTW) And I did have some steering input through the section just minimal. A S2000 can almost make it through with minimal steering input as well if it was setup on the correct line (coming in tight on the outside cone for a straighter shot). Either way, a little steering through that section or even a full slalom wouldn't have made a 5 second difference. Aw, c'mon, you're stomping all over my whining! I really enjoyed that course. It was very busy visually, but once you got it down it flowed quite nicely. One of the strongest points that the course designers do consistently is make a course that has different sections that play to the strengths of the different types of cars. I just wish I hadn't gotten car after the morning runs; it looks like everyone picked up some time in the afternoon, and that was a fun course. Guess I'm going to have to limit my instructing until I get a stronger stomach. Hopefully tonight I'll get my video youtubed; once it's available I'll post it up. Have a good one, Mike

| If tires get overheated on this short course what happens at a full length track with many laps in a race?

| Depending on the temperature you might choose different tires for AX vs. road race. AX puts more heat into tires and heats them faster because it much more turning, braking and acceleration and smoothness is harder to achieve. Looking at an AX course you will see 90's, 180's, slalom. All of which are performed in much narrower track than a race track, which is designed for side by side racing.
