So at the last autox we noticed a miss or stumble in the engine and down on power. When I got home I decided to do a compression test and I do have issues. The cylinders were 1) 200 2) 90 3) 200 4) 205 5) 165 6) 150. I shot a little oil into the low cylinders and retested but very little gain so I don't think it is rings. Oh a little engine info.....1992 M50 non-vanos. Does anyone know if there is something that is typical that these engines experience I assume with the head. I am thinking of either replacing the head or a reconditioning so if i do that who around Dallas is good for machine work? Where could I find a used M50 non-vanos head that is not trash? I plan in replacing the current engine but I was hoping to hold off till the fall on that. So I am open to suggestions/ideas/hints.

Seems pretty cut and dry from compression but you could do a leak down to check for valves vs gasket.

I used Arlington Machine Shop.  Very happy with their work and knowledge.  Ed and Eddy, father son owners.  I've heard recently they are sub-ing out the disassembly and assy.

Unfortunately I don't have a leak down set up. I used the oil in the cylinder thing to try to figure rings/piston or valves.

I made mine for <$40, maybe <$30.  All you need is a pressure regulator with a gauge, another gauge, fittings, some epoxy to plug the fitting between the gauges and a tiny drill bit.

You don't have to do the leakdown test.  You know there is a head problem.

If I understand this correctly I if put a vanos head on (since now it is non-vanos) I would need the ECU and harness changed??? Any simpler method because I sure wouldn't mind the low RPM power of the vanos motor.

So the head is off and I do have some valve seat(s) that are leaking. I turned the head upside down and filled the combustion chambers with water and sure enough the cylinder that was real low on the compression test is leaking water into the exhaust side. So I have to find a local DFW machine shop to take it to, hopefully on the Dallas side. Any suggestions???

cough cough, LS1 cough

Seriously though. I don't think a non Vanos M50 is worth rebuilding. Find one in a junk yard or upgrade to a bigger/better 6 cylinder.

Agreed that not worth a lot of effort. I am hoping with a "band aid" repair I can keep this engine running as I build a another. The cylinder walls all look good

My machine shop bill was $300 to rework the head and $35 to mill it flat.
