In December, after replacing the steering rack, I moved my (soon to be “for sale”) 318is project car out of the garage to the driveway, nose out on a slight down grade. It hadn't been started much in the past few year and was running a bit rough, so I revved it pretty good and it spit some nasty rusty snot about 5 feet out the exhaust onto the garage floor. Next project was to repair the speedo sensor connector wiring and replace the speedo gears in the cluster.
Now the starter spins, but there is no spark or fuel. I have a spark tester and also connected a timing light to verify…nada.
I swapped the fuel relays with spares, even swapped the entire fuel pump with a working unit to no avail. I also checked the resistance at the crank and cam sensors (at the connector) and got good readings according to the Bentley manual. I also swapped in a spare coil pack, still no spark Trent Cole (BTW thanks) advised that I should swap the ECU/DME with an identical working unit, still no go. I am stumped!
The Motronic stomp test gives me a 1444 code, which indicates "all clear." I have a spare crank sensor, but I'm putting that off since I'd have to remove the splash pan, a/c compressor belts & bracket to get access to it. I am not sure what would cause it to fail suddenly? Can someone tell me about the chip on the back of the instrument cluster? It just occured to me the last service I did on the car was replacing broken speedo gears. Any other connections on the back there that would cause no spark and no fuel pump action? Thanks all!

I'll buy it now that it's not running. I thought these cars had some master fuse under the fuse block or something to that effect. Maybe that was for headlights.

| I have an '89 325i and it did much the same symptoms where it all of the sudden wouldn't restart. Mine had worked fine on the way in to work, and refused to start at the end of the day. It ended up being the crank position sensor. It isn't that hard to get to on the later I-6 motors, so for me it wasn't much work, just a $75 sensor and the car started right back up. Matt

Crank sensor is a very common phantom no fuel or spark solution. Once you've checked relays etc thats the way I would go. I've never heard of them giving any indication before going out. Cam semsors are next down the list.

Shaun - did you get this car running? Do let us know what happens. If you live anywhere near me I would be happy to help.

Well I figured it out this w/e. There is no juice to the fuel pump. Now to figure out why! I already replaced the relay, ECU, cam & crank sensors.
