I have an 2000 E39 than is in need of new valve cover gaskets and I want to have the valve covers powder coated to get the paint flaking off and refresh them.  SInce this part gets pretty hot, almost as hot as the entire engine it has to be heat tolerant.  Has anyone used a powder coating company here in Dallas that did a good job for them?  I know this takes some time but also don't want the car down for a week.  Standard colors wanted; nothing special just want to make sure I do not have to do this twice.

Thank you.  I just read another solution that looks cost effective and recommended by Roundel Feb 2008.  On page 108 under Tech talk another fan has the same common problem and writes the description and receives different advice.  They say, the only way to cosmetize the valve covers is to remoev them, strip them, wash them with solvent, bead blast the alloy material and paint them.  They recommend Aluma-Blast from the Eastwood company.  Seems cheaper and a good solution.  Anyone done this before and have recomendations?  Sounds cheaper...

I don't think all those steps are necessary really.  You can use a chemical stripper to take off any paint/cosmoline, and then just clean it up.  You can scrub with a wire brush or sand lightly and then shoot it with high temp paint.  I used crackle paint on my valve cover on my race engine around 4 years ago and it's still intact.  I think I had $15 worth of aircraft stripper and another $15 in paint.

Its been said that the covers are part magnesium and are difficult to make a painting last. That special pre treat is needed.

maybe...but I'm not endorsing a product and touting it's longevity in a racing environment either.  That's like me saying my tires have the same amount of tread since the first autocross of the season.  Well, yeah they do...my garage floor isn't very hard on them.  At least nothing like Mineral Wells.

plus...for some reason I can't help myself...I have to rib Will about something at least once a month or I get a headache.
