| For all the gearheads that care Ford has built a Top Fuel Funny Car engine that John Force will be using exclusively in Funny Car. Its 500 cubic inchs, speacially designed by Force's top motor man and Ford engineers. It runs the standard Roots blower. You can buy its componet parts, right down to the main bearings, from the Ford performance catalog. Who woulda thought? Ford building 8000 hp engines It's certainly bad news for all the former block, head and component parts suppliers.

| I wonder how many laps I could get at MSR. Dont they rebuild those engines after every drag. Lets see 1.7mi x 4 rebuilds per mile = 6.8 So 7 rebuilds, one before and 6 on track. LOL

Jeron (1/4/2008)
Dont they rebuild those engines after every drag. Yes each single run, it comes completely apart and all parts examined and replaced as needed.

It is surprising to see this but if John Force is willing to slap it in his hot rod I have to think it has been tested to hell and back. ...it's either that or they threw an obscene amount of cash his way and I kind of doubt that since the NHRA doesn't put 'em in the seats like nascar.

| That may be why he has a 4 car team in funny car. He can test on one car and not sacrifice the team....that and I think you are right about a lot of cash.

| What is Ford's reason? That market isn't large enough to tap for profit. It must be the PR aspect.

dbeck (1/6/2008) That may be why he has a 4 car team in funny car. At least not after the bugs have been worked out. Alledgedly the motor has some features in it that no one else has and that have been designed in by Force's head engine guru.

"I'm not sure that Ford would allow his other team cars to run a different motor"
In Funny Car, the plan is for this to be a John Force Racing-exclusive engine at the start, but we do want to be able to sell it to Top Fuel teams for competition in the near future.”
Davis said that the current plan is for new Force Mustang driver Mike Neff to use the Ford BOSS 500 engine full-time in 2008 as it goes through its development phase. The other Force Mustang drivers – John Force, Ashley Force and Robert Hight – will use the engine after it has been further developed.
"Alledgedly the motor has some features in it that no one else has and that have been designed in by Force's head engine guru"
The BOSS 500 is the first nitro drag racing motor designed with analytical tools. It has a strengthened block for better durability and new cylinder heads developed by Ford and Force engineers. The basic design will favor areas such as the main caps register and the main webs in the block. Its engine block also is anodized blue after machining, helping ensure fans and competitors alike know when they’re seeing a Ford nitro engine under the hood.
Most of the external surface areas on the new 500-cubic-inch engine have been redesigned; a new belly pan was designed for better sealing; and the valve covers purposely call back the old Ford BOSS motors. The engine also features Ford main bearings with actual parts numbers in the Ford performance catalog.
