My 94 325is had both the dipstick and an oil level warning light. Really, how expensive is it to have both? When I check my oil, I am  as curious about the color of the oil as I am about any unexpected drops in the oil level itself. When you run a higher milage engine, you're always watching for wear and increased blowby is often the first sign.

Are you sure the warning light indicates .5 or 1 qt low or is it the traditional old "oil pressure low" warning light. My mechanic years ago told me when the oil pressure light comes on, you better immediately stop the car or say good bye to it.

There are 2 separate lights one for oil presure (shut her down now! light) and one for oil level. The oil level sensor lives in the sump right next to the dipstick. I believe my e30 also had this sensor, but it never went off. The one time my level sensor light came on in the e36 it was indeed 1 quart low.

I think its really nice to have the electronic sensor in the car. It makes it much easier to check the oil level every time you start the car up. But it'd be nice to have the dipstick when doing oil changes because of the immediate response but the oil level sensor works really well. I don't think my m3 or 318 had an oil level sensor but I may be wrong or more likely they could have not worked because I know those had been down a quart before.
