Would someone be kind enough to tell me what you use to close off the fuel lines on either side of the filter before I replace it so as to avoid being soaked with gas ?

just use a rag. Its not under that much preasure

I'm sort of anal about cleanliness so one goal, along with the fix, is to not get my hands dirty.

| No problem...and the cup holder is one of the best features on my mower. That and it cuts grass... There are clamps for rubber hoses you can pick up at Autozone or the like...but vise grips work as long as you don't go crazy with the clamping force.
