Intermittent cabin blower – 2000 323iT 90k miles

This problem first began occurring once a month, then once a week, & now it is a hard fail – no rotation of the cabin blower.  I removed the cabin filter & could rotate the squirrel cage with a screw driver.  The switch was on and the fan did not start working.  I thought there might be a dead spot on the motor brushes.

All fuses are checked good.  My question, is there a hidden fuse or relay that I am missing?

Thank you for your suggestions in advance.

Most common is the final stage resistor.  Try turning the fan speed to max.  If it comes on it is certainly the final stage resistor.  If it does not come on it could still be the final stage resistor but it could be the fan itself or something else (duh).

I should have asked if you have mechanical or climate digital control.  The above was all based digital control.

If it is mechanical, knob speed control, then it is probably the blower motor resistor which is essentially the same part.  It could be the switch but they seem to fail on only one fan setting.

Yes, this is the digital control.  I'm not sure if you are saying the final stage unit p/n 64116920365 or a separate resistor purchased as part of the cabin blower?

Yes, final stage resistor = final stage unit.  It's a pack a resistors to control the fan speed.  Looks like a porcupine.

The porcupine fins are inside the air box just after the evap coils.  You get to it from the pass side just above the tranny hump.  It is slightly hard to get to, behind a removable duct and a flap actuator arm and you need a smallish torx bit.

I ordered my E46 FSU form RMEuorpean for $58 64-11-6-920-365.

Your symptoms are classic FSU death.

Thx very much Jeron.  This was extremely helpful.  I would have gone thru the e36 side to find the resistor.  You are right, it sits behind the duct, 2 screws for the torque motor & finally 2 more screws for the FSU.
In this heat, I had to use BMW of Dallas for the part = $110 with club discount.

Stay cool!  Tim

Glad you got it fixed.

I think I worked around the motor but removing it would have probably been easier.
