I did my first oil change, just bought the car a couple of weeks ago, and I was able to lift the car up with a floor jack using the standard lift points. I didn't see anywhere that looked suitable to place jack stands.
Is there a diagram or pic that shows the correct placement for them?

| Usually the lift points (does your car have four rubber pads, like the e36?) are the best points to put jack stands. You do have to lift the car by the cross members, however. When using cross members, it usually a good idea to use some kind of padding between the jack saddle and the cross member. If your jack isn't padded, you can use a piece of wood. (Wood is also good to distribute the load across the crossmember to avoid damaging it while jacking.) The way our cars are balanced, you can also jack up the front pad on one side when lifting the back on the same side. I've found that this can be somewhat unstable when then trying to lift the other side if you want both front pads on jackstands. If you have a free rolling jack, and are on a very level surface, you can probably get away with this, but I feel alot safer going for the center of the "virtual axle" when putting both 2 or 4 pads on jack stands. --Ron

I used the rubber pads to jack the car. I looked and there appears to be a location just inside the jack points, but it has a cosmetic cover and I couldn't really tell and I didn't want to chance it.

The frame rails on either side of the trans tunnel at about the same place as where the rubber lift points are. This is what we use in the shop regularly when we can get the arm placement correct because of spaceing.
