I have a 2000 540iA Sport Package with the staggered styre 32 17" wheels. As you might know, these wheel peel terribly, and now that I need new tires, I would like to consider putting different wheels at the same time. This time I would like a non-staggered setup, same wheel front/rear, preferably 17x8, but might consider 18x8.
Please email me if you have wheels for me :-)

| An 8 inch wide wheel will limit you to a max tire width of 245, an 8.5" will go to 255 and 9.0 to 265 and 275 in general. I'm sure you could find some exceptions if you looked hard. You may find it easier to decide on a tire width, and let that tell you the wheel width. The Tire Rack has all this information, click on a tire brand and then click on the "spec" for that tire. It will give you all the dimensions and limits. Personally I would go 18" x 9" minimum on all four corners.

| Tirerack and Discounttiredirect can show you a variety or wheels that will fit. I agree with Frank, get wider. An 8" isnt bad but I would want 8.5 or 9 on a 5'er. Pick the rims first based on looks and price. There will be plenty or tire options in the sizes you are looking for.

Tire rack has very few 18" wheels for the E39 now-a-days (none in 17"), the nice ones are VERY expensive, and many of them use the "evil" hubcentric adapters since the E39 is the only BMW with the larger-than-normal-for-a-BMW hub center of 74.1mm. Unfortunately way too many folks have problems in the E39 when using hubcentric adapters so I am trying to stay away from them to try achieve the best vibration-free ride possible.
The E39 max front wheel width from the factory is in fact 8", for both the "normal" E39 and for the E39 M5. The E39 M5 takes bigger wheels/tires in the rear, but it also uses special wheel liners to allow them to fit without rub. I am trying to stick with the wheel/tire sizes that fit a non-M5 version.
Standard front tire for the E39 is a staggered configuration is 235/45R17 (on a 17x8 wheel - 20mm offset) and 255/40R17 (on a 17x9 wheel - 26mm offset) for the rear. The non-staggered configuration just uses two of the front tires in the back. Many do fit a 245mm wide tire all-around on the 17x8 wheels, so that is an option as well.
The tire I want to get is the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, which is a very strong favorite of the E39 crowd. I just need to find 4 wheels that look good and work well for my E39

| The look of an E39 improves drastically with an 18 or 19 inch wheel. A 17 is too close to a 16 to make a difference. Many on the 2 bimmer forums agree that the sweet spot is 18-19.

Yes, absolutely. In terms of looks, a 18-19 wheel looks great on an E39. Of course, an 18-19 wheel/tire combo is also heavier than their 17" counterpart, and less compliant (shorter sidewall), which gives you a harsher ride as well - there is no free lunch

| I have a full set of BBS that are 17x8 if you are interested give me a shout. With that said....take a look at Beyern rims. Discount tire sells these on their site and are very reasonable. I currently have a set on my 2000 540it and am happy with them. Mine are staggard 275 rear and 245 front. They are 18's but they sell several sizes and about 5 different designs in either polished, painted or chrome. Be careful of any deals from Ebay or internet unless you are sure they will actually work on your car. There are many who sell wheels that they say will work, but may not, so be careful.
