| Coming home from the airport, 10 minutes after cold my 2000 540i started to miss-fire under 3/4 throttle and low RPM. I could feel the car studder for maybe 3 seconds and then recover. It happend for a while, only again under laod and low RPM. Checking with my Peake tool, the first error is Timing reference High resolution signal, then error Misfire Cyl #6, then Misfire random/multiple cylinders. Car has 70k miles, new plugs at 60k, in need of chaging valve cover gaskets (may oil is in with the plugs). But it does not do this at higher revs. I cleaned the MAF just in case; but I doubt it is that. Any ideas??

I'd check of oil in the well, pull the plug and one other for comparison. If thats all good I'd label the coils and swap #6 with another one and reset the codes.

On first read, I overlooked the first error "timing ref high...". That sounds like a crank sensor.

Crank sensor, not one of two cam sensor? Where is this sensor located?

I tried to Google this fault code and web sites that seem to discuss this are ECU testing/rebuilding sites. While I doubt that my ECU is bad (only opinion since the car drives fine unless I hammer the throttle) I am thinking it is an input to the ECU. Any of your great diagnostic technicians see this fault code before and how to resolve it?

| On The E36 and E46 I'm more familiar with, the cam sensors are good about throwing their own code. But crank sensors rarely show signs of failure, instead they just die and the car wont start and you have no indication as to why. As far as ECU's, I hear of a lot BMWs with weak solder in the ECU's which sometimes caused misfires etc. But these weak solder situations usually dont throw a code but rather you just get sporadic misfires on the same cyl. The solder problem is usually temp related and does better in warm weather or when the engine is hot.

| On M5s cam position sensors rarely trigger a code that says "cam position" sensor. The replacement triumverate is the MAFs, cam position sensors (all 4 of them), and the precat O2 sensors.

| No more codes have been thrown but I am driving the car carefully until I get this figured out. The consistent symptom is low RPM studder where under 2500 rpm the car will jerk forward and then loose power maybe twice a second until the RPM is above that point. This is the remaining symptom and is consistent. I did have a cam sensor go bad on me about 2 years ago but no symptom but a chack engine light came on. Here, no check engine light and no codes. I did clean the MAF and replace it but no change in operation. I guess I can buy 1 CAM sensor and try it in both positions. If it does not fix it I guess I can buy a MAF sensor as a test (maybe borrow one) for a short ride. What do you think?

Currently there is no check engine light and you have the low RPM stutter? If that is the case I would check plugs and coils.
