N. TX is being over run by yankees and for'ners.

I hunt in Palo Pinto.  I think the rain made some good ones but there is too much food so daytime movement is low even with almost no moon.  Of the 8 guys on my lease only one saw a decent buck.

Jeron, since you are a hunter maybe you know and can advise me.

Can any adult (in the state of Texas) buy ammunition w/o a license of any kind? I'm talking about shot gun shells and brass cartridge type ammo.

Thanks, Frank

Yes, any sober adult can buy ammo.  I don't know what the age is, probably 18 but there may not be an age restriction.

Any adult can also buy a handgun, rifle or shotgun without a permit or special license.  There is a background check but they are while you wait in most cases.

You have to be 18 to buy rifle and shotgun ammunition, and 18 to buy rifles or shotguns.  You have to be 21 to buy a handgun or handgun ammo.  Other than that, there are no requirements that apply to average citizens.  If you are a felon it is illegal to own a gun, among other things.  There is a federal database setup that allows gun dealers to call and enter your license and SS# for an immediate background check.  I've done it several times in the past couple of years and the system works beautifully, and I now know the FBI isn't after me

To hunt, you need to have passed a hunter's safety course and buy a license.  It's well worth noting that the large majority of the funding nationally that goes into wetlands conservation, wildlife programs, and other such programs is funded by state licensing programs.  Furthermore, literally billions of dollars annually go into land and wildlife management programs.  Some of the largest unspoiled pieces of land in the country are kept that way by hunters and are bought with money raised from hunters.  Often hunting funding is used to buy large pieces of land which are then donated to the federal government as wildlife preserves.

Hunting can seem barbaric I'm sure, but the fact is that without hunters the state of wildlife and our natural resources in this country would be much worse than it is with them.  If you're interested or surprised by that, it's worth doing a bit of research.  You might find hunting's not so bad after all.

Cheers,

Will

I've hunted deer, pheasant and ducks in Michigan and moose, elk and bear in Alaska. I quit hunting after blasting a rabbit up close.

Just want to know if I can buy ammo w/o restriction.
