Has anyone removed their engine driven fan and installed an electric fan? If so, did you leave the aux fan in place? Or remove it also? Can you please explain how you wired the electric fan?

I am planning a cooling system overhaul and want to delete the engine fan and use a 16" Spal puller fan.

Thanks,

Brian

Leave the Aux fan, it is for the AC.

You can wire the new electric primary to the low side of the aux fan switch on the radiator with a relay.  I put a thermostat ($60), instead of using the factory fan switch.  That lets me set the ON temp.

You do not need a low temp coolant thermostat or water wetter.

I used a straight blade fan because it is quieter because it spins at a lower RPM.

Just be sure to check fan depth front to back, i was going to do the same thing but couldnt find a fan shallow enough to fit between the water pump snout and radiator.

I use a 16" Flex-Lite fan which is thicker than the Spal.  I was able to make it fit by offsetting it so that the fan motor was not directly over the water pump nut.

Heres a thread from a while back:
http://www.lscbmwcca.org/forum/Topic880-13-1.aspx?Highlight=fan

I used a Flex-A-Lite 16" straight blade and this thermostat kit from Painless:
http://www.painlessperformance.com/webcatalog/largeview.php?SearchField=30104

Take a look at the wiring diagram in the Instruction manual:
http://www.painlessperformance.com/Manuals/30104Instruction.pdf

I got the +, from the circuit breaker to the battery, at a terminal on the jump start post by the air pump.  I cant remember where exactly I took the switched lead but I think it was the glove box light.  I put a toggle switch below the eyeglass holder that cuts the switched lead so I can turn the fan off if I want.

The 16" Flex-A-Lite is mounted at the bottom passenger side corner of the radiator shroud.  I think the fan is a touch too big to fit, a thinner Spal might be better or just get a 14".   I had a 14" because I thought the 16" wouldn't fit but it died after a couple of months so I replaced it with a 16" which fits very tightly..

If I get those pictures this weekend I'll make a thread about my install.
